With over 240 million registered players worldwide, football is certainly one of the most popular games in the world but like with any other sports, it is fraught with risks and has its share of injuries. Football is a heavy-contact sport, and despite the supports and safety precautions, injuries are a common part of the game. The combination of the size of the players, speed of play, and the physical nature of the game make football injuries quite common and sometimes gruesome.

Most football injuries affect the lower extremities, which include the groin and pelvis, hip and thigh, knee, calf, foot, and ankle. Research shows that most football injuries are caused by trauma, such as a collision with an opponent or landing awkwardly from a jump. Approximately one quarter to one-third of all football injuries are due to overuse and wear and tear and develop over a while.

Sports scientists advise that loads of rest, good dietary discipline and proper sleep can help to prevent or in some cases totally avoid the more serious injuries. Professional footballers are often warned not to play through pain as compromised muscles and tissues are more susceptible to injuries. In addition, brittle and stiff muscles will most likely snap or tear, thus warming up and cooling down is essential.

Some of the most common injuries in football include,

1. Concussions - A brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body. this occurs from a mild blow to the head, either with or without loss of consciousness and can lead to temporary cognitive symptoms. symptoms may include headache, confusion and lack of coordination, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, ringing in the ears, sleepiness and excessive fatigue. consciousness can also occur without direct impact to the head; a hard hit to the body could cause the head and neck to move quickly with a whiplash effect. often when a concussion occurs in football, players are advised to take time to heal, and only return to their normal routine after a doctor trained in treating concussions has evaluated them. Following these steps will protect their brain and reduce the risk of more serious, long-term issues. 

2. Hamstring Strains - Hamstring injuries are common in many sports, including football. Hamstring injuries are the most prevalent muscle injury in football, and 12%-33% of athletes with a hamstring injury experience a recurrence within a year after the initial injury. Hamstrings are responsible for bending the knee and extending the hip. Both functions are performed simultaneously when a player is running and significant strain is placed on the muscle group with each stride, increasing the risk of injury. Hamstring injuries are typically caused by rapid acceleration activities when running or initiating running activity. Injuries to the hamstring muscles can range from a minor strain to a major rupture. A minor strain is classified as a grade I tear, grade II tears are partial ruptures, whereas a complete rupture or tear is classified as a grade III tear. Grade III injuries most frequently occur in athletic activities such as football. Most hamstring injuries heal without surgery. Rarely, when there is a complete rupture at the ischium, or when a significant piece of Ischial bone is jerked away, surgery is necessary. After pain and swelling have been controlled and an acceptable range of motion and flexibility has been attained, a gradual strengthening program should follow. Depending on the severity of the injury, the entire rehabilitative process may take several months. Players who have had hamstring injuries include, Ousmane Dembele, Fernando Torres, Michael Owen, Neymar, and Gareth Bale. 

3. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury - Not long ago, this injury was considered a death sentence to a player's career but with the innovations in medical science, players now routinely return upon rehabilitation. The ACL is a tissue that connects the thighbone to the shinbone, at the knee. Many people hear or feel a "pop" in the knee when an ACL injury occurs. the knee may swell, feel unstable and become too painful to bear weight. Depending on the severity of the ACL injury, treatment may include rest and rehabilitation exercises to help gain strength and stability or surgery to replace the torn ligament followed by rehabilitation. This injury can occur in several different ways, most notably by suddenly slowing down and changing direction (cutting), pivoting with the foot firmly planted, landing awkwardly from a jump, and receiving a direct blow to the knee or collision, such as a football tackle among many other.

Famous footballers who have at one point or the other have ACL injury are Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Reuben Loftus-Cheek, Kurt Zouma, Theo Walcot, among many others. 

4. Rotator Cuff Strains- Rotator cuff tears refer to partial or full tears of one or a number of the four muscles that help move the shoulder and keep the end of the long bone of the arm within the shallow socket of the shoulder. The most common torn muscle of the rotator cuff is the muscle that helps lift the arm away from the body, which is known as the supraspinatus. Rotator cuff injuries may happen with repetitive overhead use of the arm, but can also occur after suffering trauma, a fall onto the outstretched hand. Shoulder pain in soccer players usually occur due to trauma, a fall or a blow to the shoulder joint ina a tackle, overstretching (especially reaching above and overhead in goalies). This injury majorly happens to goalkeepers who have had to stretch their full-body or fall to the ground at one point or the other. 

5. Achilles Tendonitis Rupture - Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles' tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to the heel bone. Achilles tendinitis is caused by repetitive or intense strain on the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. This tendon is used when you walk, run, jump or push up on your toes. The most common initial symptom of Achilles tendon rupture is a sudden snap at the lower calf, intense pain, and inability to point the foot downward. For athletes, surgery is often the first choice of treatment. 

Players who have had Achilles injury include David Beckham, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Laurent Koscielny among many others.

5 COMMON INJURIES IN FOOTBALL AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

……as UI Pioneers and FUTMINNA Transformers look to overturn First Leg Deficit

As the race for Quarter Finals spots in the drama and fun filled 2019 season hots up, the teams are back in the second leg of their respective ties in a quest for honour and pride.

Ibadan will be agog as the Pioneers will attempt to pull off a Houdini-esque escape as they look to overturn a two goal first leg deficit. Buoyed by their vociferous home support, Coach Allen and his boys will hope to finally put one over their bitter rivals from Ife and qualify. Indeed, it was at this point in the 2018 season that the Pioneers were kicked out by OAU Giants. Only time will tell if indeed history will repeat itself once again. 

For the FUOYE Dazzlers, the mission if they choose to accept, is simple. Find a way to score 4 unreplied goals past one of the meanest defenses from last season, UNILORIN Warriors and then hope that their leaky defense from the first leg which let in 5 goals manages to hold against the barrage from the rampaging Ilorin Warriors. Mission Impossible!? 6pm Wednesday will definitely tell us.

In the clash between the evenly matched FUTA Tigers and LASU Blazers, it is all or nothing as both teams know that they have to win in order to book their spot in an intriguing quarter final draw. Indeed, the tie is finely balanced as the two teams totally cancelled each other in an entertaining goalless first leg draw.

Up North, FUTMINNA Transformers will bank on home support to spur them in their testy tie against tournament favorites’, UNIBEN Royals as they look to cancel the first leg deficit. The priceless away goal gotten in the 2-1 first leg defeat has ensured that we will be served up a tasty battle as both teams will leave their all on the turf to bag the final Quarter Final spots on offer for the match week.

The two-day training was powered by Premier Cool and facilitated by the fantastic Coaches, Lewis Childs, Andy Smith and Luke Roberts of Manchester City FC. BATTLE OF THE GREATEST AS LCU GLADIATORS vs UI PIONEERS CLASH IN THE IBADAN DERBY

Pace Sports and Entertainment Marketing Limited, the organisers of the Higher Institutions Football League (HiFL) has released the draws for the round of 16 games at an event held in Lagos. The games are scheduled to hold between June and September 2021.

In week 1, AAUA Luminaries will play OAU Giants in Ondo, FUTA Tigers will tackle UNILAG Marines in Akure, LAUTECH Hunters will attempt to hunt down the FUTMINNA Transformers in Ogbomoso while KSU Steelers engages UNILORIN Warriors.

For the week 2 games, UNIBEN Royals will play defending champion UNICAL Malabites, IAUE Minders will tackle UNN Lions in Port Harcourt, ABU Nobles will confront UAM Tillers in Zaria while BUK Stallions slugs it out with UNIMAID Desert Warriors in Kano.

BlogHiFL: ROUND OF 16 DRAWS HOLDS IN LAGOS

The draw for the maiden edition of HiFL e-Invitational tournament has been made as a select group of gamers from higher institutions across the country prepares to show their FIFA 20 prowess. Representatives from the schools which are highlighted below will compete as top La Liga teams on the EA SPORTS FIFA 20 from May 18th – 22nd 2020, and the draw for the competition has thrown up very exciting ties.

The knockout-style elimination tournament will begin Round of 8 proceedings with a mouth-watering clash between the FUTA Tigers and ABUAD Stars before terminating with another juicy encounter between DELSU Tigers and wildcard entrants Redeemer’s University. Winners of the four Round of 8 clashes will move onto the Round of 4 as we look to crown the kings of the e-Invitational over the next week.

DRAW REVEALED FOR HiFL 2020 E-INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

UAM TILLERS, BUK STALLIONS, ESUT EXPLORERS and RSU DOLPHINS have all advanced to the Round of 16 in the ongoing 2019 Higher Institutions Football League 2019 season on Thursday, 18th July. UAM TILLERS emerged as group H winners after qualifying automatically due to their outstanding performance as the winner of the 2018 season, while BUK Stallions go through as runners up after securing a tough 3:3 draw against BSU Weavers in the final game of the group.

BSU WEAVERS’s Silas Aondover’s stellar performance certainly pleased the cheering crowd but was not enough to see the Makurdi Side qualify despite his hat trick, as BUK stallions leveraged on a tight final day draw to clinch 4 points after an opening game win against NSUK MINERS. UAM TILLERS are paired in group H, with BSU WEAVERS, BUK STALLIONS and NSUK MINERS.

In Umudike, ESUT EXPLORERS topped Group D by securing 7 points to go through to the round of 16, after outclassing their opponents to outline their intentions as contenders for the trophy. The other qualification spot in the group however went down to the wire as RSU DOLPHINS emerged after garnering 5 points from the group.

The 16 teams that have all qualified from the knock out stage, include Super Four teams from the 2018 season, UAM TILLERS, UNILORIN WARRIORS, UNICAL MALABITES and OAU GIANTS, others are UI PIONEERS, LASU BLAZERS, FUTA TIGERS, UNIBEN ROYALS, BUK STALLIONS, ESUT EXPLORERS, RSU DOLPHINS, UNIUYO TUSKITES, FUOYE DAZZLERS, FUTMINNA TRANSFORMERS, KUST PYRAMIDS and ABU NOBLES. Round of 16 games kicks off on the 24th of July, with OAU GIANTS renewing their rivalry with UI Pioneers in a battle for the ages in Ile-Ife.

The league is organised by PACE Sports and Entertainment Marketing in partnership with the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA). The league is proudly sponsored by Stanbic IBTC, Premier Cool and Indomie Nigeria. The top 32 Universities from NUGA-member institutions will play over a period of 21 weeks, with the final four billed for the Agege Stadium, Lagos.

HIFL®: 16 TEAMS QUALIFY FOR HIFL KNOCK OUT STAGE

As teams prepare to slug it out in the 2019 edition of the Higher Institutions Football League, draws for the group stages has been held in Lagos yesterday as the new team jerseys and logos were unveiled. The 32 teams that qualified for the group stage were draw into eight groups of four teams each starting from Group A- Group H from the Sahel and Coastal divisions.

When the story of the 2019 season will be told, few names will ring louder in the minds of fans and supporters alike than that of Asen Shater of the UAM Tillers. After a magnificent campaign which saw the breakout Shater almost lead the Tillers to reclaim the title they won last year and dazzled the whole league with his mesmerizing dribbles and jaw dropping goals like the last minute effort against OAU Giants in Ile-Ife. Asen Shater is truly on a roll!

His brilliance was a major factor in the Tillers run to the finals as they struggled without inspirational leader and goal machine, Ebuka David. It may have taken two attempts and living in the shadow of Ebuka David, but Asen Shater is now The Elite.

HiFL 2019 OFFICIAL STATISTICS

The first day of the inaugural HiFL e-Invitational tournament kicked off with a bang, with FUTA Tigers and UI Pioneers qualifying for the Round of 4 after winning their EA SPORTS FIFA 20 matches.

The day’s action started with FUTA Tigers represented in the game by Real Madrid trashing ABUAD Stars who wore Villareal CF’s colours 2 – 1 AET on golden goals to book their spot in the next round after a keenly fought tie.

In the second tie, only penalties could separate the UI Pioneers and UNILAG Marines in their feisty battle of the west after a 120-minute stalemate. The Pioneers ably represented by Athletic Club displayed nerves of steel to triumph 4 – 2 on penalties.

HiFL 2020 E-INVITATIONAL DAY 1 REVIEW: FUTA TIGERS SHOW SUPERIORITY AS UI PIONEERS SNEAK THROUGH ON PENALTIES

Hostilities continued in the day 2 of the inaugural HiFL e-Invitational tournament, with LEADCITY Gladiators pulling off upset to join DELSU Titans in completing the pool for the Round of 4.

The Gladiators flying the flag of Atletico Madrid delivered a performance that even Diego Simeone himself would be proud of displaying poise and control on their way to a two-nil victory over the shell shocked UNIBEN Royals to join the pool for tomorrow’s Round of 4 games.

In the second game of the day, wildcard entrant’s REDEEMER’S were simply no match for a rampaging DELSU Titans who were as dominant as their avatar Barcelona FC as they trounced them six goals to two to outline their title credentials.
